About

I am an associate professor of English and Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina, where I teach courses in regional studies, southern literature, and creative writing.  I am the author of Physical Science (2010), a chapbook of poems from Finishing Line Press, and a book of literary scholarship called The Intellectual in Twentieth-Century Southern Literature (2012), from Louisiana State University Press.  My poetry and creative nonfiction have appeared in a variety of journals and newspapers.  My new research projects include New South verse memoirs, Italian-Americans in Southern Appalachia, foodways in southern literature, and portrayals of the South in popular literature and film.

I regularly attend meetings of the American Literature Association, the North Carolina Writers Conference, the Society for the Study of Southern Literature, the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association.  I have served two terms on the Executive Board of the RMMLA, and am currently a member of the American Waldensian Society Board of Directors.  I am also on the poetry editorial board of Weber: The Contemporary West.  I am a former editor of The Carolina Quarterly and wrote a column for the Raleigh News and Observer from 2001 – 2002.  I hold a Ph.D. in Twentieth-Century American and Southern Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I grew up in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
